“I have been in the education field for over 10 years, and I have met some of the brightest minds stuck in a monotonous school system. Shamefully witnessing the priority of testing, not focusing on the life skills that require mistakes and successes during the processes. In turn, those brightest minds become less involved with their education which could lead to behavioral problems.”
— Nicole “Ms. Cullen” Cullen
What We’ve Achieved
I have gone through three major changes within my college career. I wanted to be a veterinarian so incredibly bad. And, somewhere down the line, my interest in it became too much of a chore (in my young teenage brain).
Going into a 4-year university I wanted to get into something related to sports, my other passion, at the time. Low and behold I am told by many professors that women don’t stand a chance in sports related jobs. Now, a people pleaser like me, took that as my first sign of personal rejection; instead of using the disappointment I had in my teacher’s choice of misogynistic words as fuel to prove him wrong.
My journey of paying student loans of a degree I didn’t even use to then return to college to become a teacher was your typical horrible financial decisions one after another. I didn’t learn budgeting or anything about finance, but I used the excuse that I am a wiz at math; I’ll figure it out!
As an overly cliched narrator would say, “She in fact didn’t figure it out.“ I did in fact table the learning for later and continued to make terrible financial decisions. Instead of healing my wounds and finally learning a valuable lesson that would have continued to help me in many areas of my life; I shamed myself for not FIGURING it out.
Why Team Buzz?
On September 2, 2023, my cousin Sabrina Bohlen, was killed when trying to help a stranger in distress, off a highway in Arizona. The last thing she said to me on that day was that she admired my dorky hashtag I made to represent our support for our grandfather, Buzz. #teambuzz Rest in Power, Sabrina.
